Stylist Elizabeth Saltzman explains the subtle message in the 'Mary Queen of Scots' star’s silver gown.

All hail Saoirse Ronan. The Mary Queen of Scots actress hit the 76th Golden Globes red carpet in a silver-hued custom Gucci gown.

Working with stylist Elizabeth Saltzman, the star opted for a custom Gucci antique platinum beaded sheer tulle gown with crystal embroidery and a plunging neckline. Ronan paired the look with Chopard diamond earrings and rings.

But the dress wasn’t just a major red carpet moment for the awards season veteran: there was significance behind its shimmering color, too.

“Last year was such a tumultuous year for so many things,” explains Saltzman, citing everything from political tumult to climate change. “There was a lot of negativity, and I kept trying to find the positive.”

And while styling is a business that’s “the frivolous side of the world,” says Salzman, “it has to go on.”

Salzman’s solution? “I just said, ‘I’d like a silver lining,’” says Salzman, who approached Gucci with the idea of creating Ronan’s gown in the metallic hue. “It’s so embarrassing, but I feel like I really want to be able to say something.”
