Sarah Hyland Addresses Online Bullies Who Have Criticized Her Weight Loss
"I normally don't comment on things like this because it draws attention to those trying to spread negativity but I'm here to explain a few things and spread love," writes the 'Modern Family' actress.
Sarah Hyland is tired of folks of criticizing her recent weight loss, so much so that she's taken to Twitter to address the issue with her 1.5 million followers.
"I'd like to address something that has not only been brought up on Twitter but has been HEAVILY discussed by all of you in my Instagram comments," the Modern Family actress wrote in her Notes app, in which she took a screenshot of her message. "That something is my weight. I normally don't comment on things like this because it draws attention to those trying to spread negativity but I'm here to explain a few things and spread love."
She continued, "I haven't had the greatest year. Maybe one day I'll talk about it but for now, I'd like my privacy."
Hyland explained that she's been ordered to bed rest for the past few months, which has led her to lose quite a bit of muscle mass. "My circumstances have put me in a place where I'm not in control of what my body looks like," she wrote.
According to the 26-year-old star, the comments about her weight started pouring in after she posted an Instagram photo of herself wearing a tee from boyfriend Dominic Sherwood's apparel line, which has part of its proceeds going to the Anti-Bullying Alliance. Ironically, she ended up getting bullied, "which made me laugh but then it dawned on me that young girls are reading posts that are saying that I'm promoting anorexia due to my weight," Hyland wrote. "While these comments don't affect me, they may affect others."
Though the actress didn't share what she's been going through, she did note that she's been taking prednisone, a steroid that's used for suppressing the immune system and inflammation.
"For those on prednisone I know what you're going through and I commend you sticking it out as I have," read her note. "My self confidence is not rendered from your comments. Because I will always be too fat. I will always be too skinny."
Hyland concluded, "I am grateful for the life I live and you should be too. Don't let other's comments alter any part of you! Love and positivity is what we need most. Especially at a time like this."
In addition to returning to her role as Haley Dunphy on Modern Family, which has been renewed for seasons 9 and 10, Hyland stars in ABC's Dirty Dancing remake, which is set to premiere Wednesday night.
