'Sarah Marshall' memorable overseas

Overall international boxoffice cool despite the weather

The general temperature of the international boxoffice was the opposite of the weekend's unseasonably hot weather in much of Europe, with the comedy "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" emerging No. 1 with an estimated $7 million from about 1,000 screens in nine markets.

The Judd Apatow co-production, starring Jason Segel and Kristen Bell, finished on top in Australia and in the U.K., where the Universal International release opened to an estimated $4.1 million from 393 sites for a $10,433 per-screen average, representing 26% of the market. "Sarah's" 11-day overseas total stands at $9.3 million; it's at $44.4 million worldwide.

With mid-80s temperatures holding down weekend theatrical attendance in many European markets, the spring season overseas went out with a whimper. But things will change rapidly this week with the start of the summer blockbuster season.

The first tentpole out of the gate internationally is Paramount's release of the Marvel Comics $135 million version of "Iron Man," with Robert Downey Jr., opening in 57 markets worldwide from Wednesday-Saturday.

Tied for second place on the weekend with an estimated $6.2 million each were Sony's "21" and Fox's "Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who!"

"21," the saga of MIT math whizzes at blackjack, played 1,775 screens in 28 markets for an overseas cume of $30.7 million. The animated "Horton" played 5,100 sites in 45 markets for a cume of $127.2 million.

Fox's police drama "Street Kings" finished No. 3 with an estimated $6.1 million from 2,650 screens in 45 territories for a cume of $19.9 million. Warners' "Fool's Gold" with Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey was fourth with an estimated $5.1 million from 1,600 situations in 40 markets. The adventure-comedy's cume is $26.5 million.

No. 5 was Paramount's "The Spiderwick Chronicles," which opened in Japan to an estimated $1 million from 350 sites. The fantasy's overall weekend tally was $4.4 million from 2,796 screens in 64 territories for a cume of $81 million.

Japan was a busy international market on the weekend. Warner's "10,000 BC" opened No. 3 in the territory for an estimated $1.6 million from 468 screens, pushing the stanza's tally to $2.2 million from 1,650 sites in 52 markets. The cume is $164.5 million.

Paramount's "Cloverfield" in its third Japan frame pushed its market cume to $9.5 million and $87.7 million internationally overall. Fox's release of Robert Redford's "Lions for Lambs" raised its second-weekend Japan cume to $3.1 million, with $45.2 million overall from overseas.

France was no slouch, either. The comedy smash "Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis" commanded an estimated $3.4 million from about 850 sites for a France-only cume of $180 million. Ranking No. 1 in Paris and suburbs was the opening of TMF Distribution's "Cash" with Jean Reno. The Spanish-made horror title "Rec" finished No. 2 in its market debut.

Fox's comedy spoof "Meet the Spartans" continued to chug along with a solid Italy opening ($2.3 million from 289 screens) and an estimated $3.2 overall on the weekend from 700 screens in 18 markets; its cume is $42.8 million. Fox's "27 Dresses," on the back of a strong France opening (No. 3 in Paris and suburbs), compiled a $1.7 million frame from 600 spots in 10 territories for a cume of $74.7 million.

Disney's German-language acquisition "Sommer" topped the German and Austrian markets for the second consecutive weekend with an estimated $1.4 million from 850 sites for a two-market cume of $4.3 million. Meanwhile, Disney's "The Game Plan" came up with $1.1 million from 1,280 situations in 14 markets for an overseas cume of $52.2 million (versus $90 million domestic).

Under its new Paramount-Transmission label, PPI opened "The Painted Veil," a 2006 drama from director John Curran about a British doctor in China, at 63 screens in Australia and New Zealand for an estimate $681,000. Disney's 3-D concert title, "Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert," opened at seven sites in Brazil for an estimated $128,000. The full weekend estimate was $277,000 from 130 spots in 12 markets for a cume of $4.1 million.
