Satellite Awards: '12 Years a Slave' Wins Best Motion Picture

Matthew McConaughey and Cate Blanchett take top acting honors.

12 Years a Slave won best motion picture at the 18th annual Satellite Awards, voted by the International Press Academy, and also earned best director honors for Steve McQueen. Gravity picked up the most film trophies, a total of three, taking home the prizes for Steven Price’s score, its visual effects and sound, as the IPA, composed of international journalists, announced its awards Sunday.

Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto earned the best actor and supporting actor awards, respectively, for their performances in Dallas Buyers Club, while Cate Blanchett was named best actress for Blue Jasmine, and June Squibb was hailed as best supporting actress for Nebraska.

Among the TV victors, Breaking Bad was named best drama series, while Orange Is the New Black was applauded s best comedy series. Game of Thrones was singled out as best genre series.

Special achievement awards went Mike Medavoy (Mary Pickford Award), Garrett Brown (Tesla Award), Guillermo del Toro (Auteur Award), Gabrielle Tana (Independent Producer of the Year Award) and Ryan Coogler (Honorary Satellite Award).
