'Saving Mr. Banks' Trailer: Tom Hanks as Walt Disney in 'Mary Poppins' Biopic

What happens when an irresistible creative force meets an immovable, IP-holding object?

Anyone who has ever tried to get a movie made in Hollywood is likely to identify -- and wince just a little -- at the predicament of Walt Disney in this first trailer for Disney's Saving Mr. Banks

The first depiction of the icon in a film, it follows the family studio head, played by Tom Hanks, in his struggles to get a big-screen adaptation of Mary Poppins off the ground. Working against him: the stubborn reluctance and then constant interference of the famous nanny's creator, P.L. Travers (Emma Thompson).

What happens when an irresistible creative force meets an immovable, IP-holding object? Movie magic, we now know in hindsight, is made.

Fans of the classic children's film and Disneyana in general will likely delight in this faithful recreation of Disney's kingdom in its 1960s heyday. The trailer also features Jason Schwartzman and B.J. Novak as the Sherman brothers, the songwriting team behind Poppins' unforgettable score, among several other familiar faces, including Paul Giamatti, Bradley Whitford and Rachel Griffiths.

And what about that title?  It refers to the story's disciplinarian patriarch, which we learn from the trailer was based on Travers' real father, who inspired her to write the book in the first place.

Saving Mr. Banks hits theaters on Dec. 13, 2013.
