'Savvy' suitors: Penguin, Walden
EmptyPenguin Young Readers Group and Walden Media have jointly acquired North American rights to Ingrid Law's debut novel, "Savvy," with Walden Media set to adapt the book into a feature film.
"Savvy," set for publication in May by Dial Books for Young Readers/Walden Media, follows family members who gain different magical powers (such as making the world windy or rainy) on their 13th birthdays.
But before a young daughter learns what her power will be, tragedy strikes the family, leading the children to race against time to avoid a perilous situation.
The acquisition is part of a pre-emptive multibook deal with Writers House. Walden Media head of production Alex Schwartz will oversee development of the film adaptation for his company.
Law wrote and illustrated two e-books for children, "The Faerie Wedding Tale" and "A Quilt for Uncle Paul."
Executive vp business and legal affairs Jim Meenaghan negotiated the film rights on behalf of Walden Media.
