The 'Scarface' Mansion Gets Discounted to $17.9 Million
It hit the market last year with a $35 million price tag but has now been slashed 49 percent.
Tony Montana devotees are now $17.1 million closer to owning the mansion of their dreams.
That’s the amount prospective real estate buyers would save on the Montecito estate prominently featured in the 1983 Al Pacino drug lord epic. Also known as El Fureidis, it hit the market last year with a $35 million price tag but has now been slashed 49 percent, to $17.9 million.
“This is a one of a kind trophy property,” said listing agent Dina Landi in a statement. “The owner is ready to sell and is looking for an offer.”
The 9,816-square-foot Roman villa, built in 1906 and designed by architect Bertam Goodhue (who also was behind New York’s Saint Thomas Church and the Los Angeles Central Library), sits on 10.39 acres that feature Persian gardens, multiple terraces and reflecting pools and more than 100 varieties of palm and other trees.
Inside, the four-bedroom, four full-bathroom and five half-bathroom recently underwent a multimillion-dollar renovation to install modern luxuries such as radiant floor heating and a steam shower while preserving its historic neoclassical highlights, including a Byzantine-style “conversation room” that features an 18-foot-high dome hand-painted in 24K gold leaf and modeled after Rome’s St. John Lateran church.
The property also showcases art by Henry Wadsworth Moore, whose 24K gold leaf-painted barreled ceiling over the formal dining room depicts Alexander the Great conquering Persepolis, and Lee Lawrie (best known for sculpting Rockefeller Center’s Atlas), whose nine bas-reliefs depicting Arthurian legends can be seen between columns that adorn the south side of the estate.
In addition to its Scarface infamy, El Fureidis has hosted real-life luminaries including Charles Chaplin, John F. Kennedy, Winston Churchill, Albert Einstein and Nobel prize-winning writer Thomas Mann. It is represented by Riskin Partners and Emily Kellenberger of Village Properties Realtors.
