Alex Gibney's doc investigates the Church of Scientology.

FilmRise has acquired U.S. DVD and non-exclusive download rights for the Emmy-nominated HBO documentary Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief.

The Alex Gibney-directed film that investigates the Church of Scientology will be released on DVD and Blu-ray on Oct. 6, as well as on demand on Amazon Instant Video, Google Play, PlayStation, iTunes, Xbox and Vudu on Oct. 30.

Adapted from Lawrence Wright’s bestseller, Going Clear (2013), the film premiered in January at the Sundance Film Festival before airing on HBO on March 29, becoming the network’s second most watched documentary premiere in nearly a decade. The film, which received strong reviews at the festival, was denounced as "biased, one-sided and containing numerous inaccuracies" by the Church of Scientology.

Going Clear has been nominated for seven Emmy awards, including outstanding directing for nonfiction programming and outstanding documentary or nonfiction special.

"Alex Gibney’s latest work is his boldest, and his investigation is an exhilarating experience," said FilmRise CEO Danny Fisher. "After seeing Going Clear, the public is certainly going to have many more questions about the Church of Scientology."
