Score grabs English Premier rights

TORONTO -- Canadian cable sports broadcaster Score Media Inc. on Wednesday said it has paid $3.15 million to wrest the exclusive domestic TV rights to English Premier League Saturday soccer games from rival Rogers Sportsnet.

Toronto-based Score Media, which operates the Score headline sports channel, will air English Premier League games on Saturday mornings beginning in fall 2007.

Score Media outbid Rogers Sportsnet to sub-license the Canadian TV rights from Fox Sports International, which in turn grabbed the North American TV rights to English Premier League game in the U.S. market through to the 2009-10 seasons.

The Score offers daily sports update shows along with live telecasts of college and professional basketball games.

A third Canadian cable sports channel, the Sports Network, will continue airing UEFA Champions League soccer games.
