Scorsese to present Leone classic in Rome

ROME -- The RomaCinemaFest's star-studded Extra sidebar added a little more glitter Monday as organizers announced that Martin Scorsese will attend the event to present the refurbished edition of Sergio Leone's 1968 Western classic "Once Upon a Time in the West."

It will be the second time Scorsese has attended the two-year-old event. The director appeared at last year's edition for the European premiere of his film "The Departed."

"It is a great honor to welcome a talent like Martin Scorsese back to the festival, and we are particularly pleased because it is in conjunction with an Italian film," Extra director Mario Sesti said in an interview.

As he did in 2006, the Oscar-winning director will participate in a discussion about film as part of the Extra sidebar, joining such scheduled attendees as Francis Ford Coppola, Sophia Loren, Terrence Malick, Jane Fonda, Gerard Depardieu and Bernardo Bertolucci.

Scorsese founded the Film Foundation in 1990, in part to help refurbish and preserve classic films. According to Sesti, the work on "West" is the first time Scorsese's foundation has refurbished a non-U.S. film.

"West," the 30th production to show in Rome's Extra section this year, will screen Oct. 24. The festival runs Oct. 18-27.
