Scribe customized for Uni 'Lowriders'

Cheo Hodari Coker has been given the keys to write "Lowriders," a drama for Universal and Imagine set in the world of low-riding cars. Imagine's Brian Grazer is producing. The project is based on an idea by Grazer.

Imagine and Universal execs went hunting for a scribe who could write authentically about the scene and craft a solid story. Coker, who is coming off the Notorious B.I.G. biopic "Notorious," fit the bill. He will tackle the project in an office at Imagine's Beverly Hills headquarters.

The story focuses on a kid from Pacoima with a dead-end job and a girlfriend who wants to get married who dreams of building the perfect lowrider. When he gets his chance, he must decide how far is willing to go to realize his dream.

Mister Cartoon, a Los Angeles-based tattoo and graffiti artist involved in the culture and whose real name is Mark Machado, is exec producing with Estevan Oriol.

Coker, repped by CAA and Caliber Media, was a journalist before transitioning to screenwriting. "Notorious," for which Coker shares credit with Reggie Rock Bythewood, is based on his book, "Unbelievable: The Life, Death, and Afterlife of the Notorious B.I.G." (partialdiff)
