'Season' off to good start on 2 charts

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's "Open Season" easily took the top spot on the national DVD sales chart for the week ending Feb. 4. The animated feature, which generated $84.3 million in theaters during the holidays, outsold its nearest competitor, 20th Century Fox's "The Marine," by a margin of nearly 3-to-1.

"Marine," an actioner about a group of diamond thieves that grossed $18.8 million at the boxoffice, managed to storm to the top of Home Media Magazine's video rental chart for the week, earning an estimated $6.3 million to second-ranked "Season's" $6 million.

Two other new releases debuted in the top 10 on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart for the week: MGM's "Flyboys" at No. 3 and Sony Pictures' "Facing the Giants" at No. 7. Fox's "Little Miss Sunshine," meanwhile, rose from No. 10 to No. 8 in its seventh week in stores. The comedy is the only one of the five best picture Oscar nominees already available on video. According to Fox, the film experienced a bump as soon as the nominations were announced, with sales rising as much as 200% at some retail stores.

On the rental chart, "Flyboys" also debuted at No. 3, with estimated earnings of $5.7 million. The previous week's top renter, Lionsgate's "Saw III," slipped to No. 4, with rental earnings of $5.6 million.
