Oswalt took over Louis C.K.'s role, while original castmembers Eric Stonestreet, Kevin Hart, Jenny Slate, Ellie Kemper, Lake Bell, Dana Carvey, Hannibal Buress and Bobby Moynihan all return in the sequel.

The first trailer for The Secret Life of Pets 2 was released Wednesday.

While the plot is unknown, the sequel catches up with characters introduced in the 2016 film. The Secret Life of Pets follows the interruption in Jack Russell terrier Max's (Louis C.K.) quiet life after his owner takes in a stray dog named Duke (Eric Stonestreet).

Stonestreet, Kevin Hart, Jenny Slate, Ellie Kemper, Lake Bell, Dana Carvey, Hannibal Buress and Bobby Moynihan all reprise their roles from the original film.

New castmembers include Patton Oswalt, Tiffany Haddish, Nick Kroll, Harrison Ford and Pete Holmes. Oswalt took over the main voice role of Max. It was announced in November 2017 that C.K. would not reprise the role after he was accused of sexual misconduct.

The trailer opens with Katie (Kemper) asking her dog Max if he would like to go for a walk.

"I've got to admit. This is nice," says Max as he and his owner stroll through their neighborhood. The dog then realizes that Katie is taking him to the veterinarian and he screams, "You tricked me!"

A question then appears onscreen that asks if humans really know their pets as well as they think they do.

A cat in the waiting room assures Max that the animal doctor is the best in the business and that he specializes in behavioral disorders. "But I don't have a behavioral disorder," says Max.

"Yeah, I'm fine, too," says the cat, who quickly loses its cool. "It's my human that's nuts. I mean, you know, I bring her a dead bird, she throws it out. I bring her a dead mouse, right in the garbage! Is nothing I do good enough for you, Mother?"

Max then realizes that many of the pets in the waiting room also have behavioral disorders. A hamster runs frantically on a wheel and tries to get out of his cage, while a fellow dog questions whether or not he's a bad pet. Two cats then say in unison, "We start fires."

"That was weird," says another dog. A cat responds, "Oh, sister, it's gonna get way weirder."
