Seeds planted for 'Green Gables' prequel

TORONTO -- Canadian producer Sullivan Entertainment will shoot a prequel to "Anne of Green Gables," completing a movie trilogy based on the classic children's novel.

Sullivan Entertainment president Kevin Sullivan said Thursday that the 2008 release of "Anne of Green Gables: A New Beginning" will be timed for the 100th anniversary of the publication of the original novel by L.M. Montgomery.

Sullivan, who will write, produce and direct the latest incarnation of the tale, said fans of the classic novel set in rural Prince Edward Island remain connected worldwide through the Internet and have been demanding another installment.

Sullivan is casting across Canada for a 10- to 12-year-old redheaded girl to play Anne in the prequel, and even using YouTube to cast a net and field self-generated auditions.

Production on the $6 million movie is expected to start in September. It follows earlier franchise installments "Anne of Green Gables: The Sequel" and "Anne of Green Gables: The Continuing Story," both of which starred Megan Follows as Anne.

The franchise also was made into a popular TV miniseries.
