'Selma' Director Ava DuVernay to Head Mumbai Festival Jury

The 17th edition of the festival will open with Hindi title 'Aligarh.'

Selma director Ava DuVernay will head the international competition jury for the 17th Mumbai Film Festival (MAMI), the organizers have announced. 

“I'm thrilled to have been invited to head the international jury for MAMI and look forward to celebrating the work of a diverse array of filmmakers with energetic, engaged audiences in the dynamic city of Mumbai,” said DuVernay .

“Ava DuVernay is one of the most exciting talents working in cinema today. Ava's presence will inspire our filmmakers and energize our festival,” added MAMI festival director Anupama Chopra.

The international competition section is open to debut filmmakers worldwide who can enter titles made within a calendar year of the festival.

This year's edition will open with Hindi title Aligarh, which recently premiered at Busan. Directed by Hansal MehtaAligarh is set in the town of the same name in central India and revolves around a professor who is suspended from his university after he is accused of being gay.

The Mumbai Film Festival is organized by the Mumbai Academy of Moving Images and runs Oct. 29 through Nov. 5.
