Sergeant waltzes off 'Dancing' to big ratings

BBC correspondent gets 1.1 million viewers

LONDON -- He might have been dubbed a "pig in Cubans" but 11.1 million viewers tuned in to watch John Sergeant bow out almost gracefully on Saturday night's edition of "Strictly Come Dancing."

With a final waltz, and tears from his dancing partner Kristina, the cuddly anti-hero -- whose obvious lack of dancing ability met with the judges ire despite being beloved by audiences -- left the floor to a standing ovation.

Sergeant, the bumble-footed former BBC and ITV political correspondent, caused a furor here with his decision to quit the U.K.'s version of "Dancing With the Stars," despite being the viewers' favorite.

Explaining his decision to quit, Sergeant cited the possibility that he might actually win as "a joke too far."
