Sarah Koenig and Dana Chivvis will return to their popular first-season case to go over what happens during the subject's new hearing.

Fans of Serial season one are in for a treat — the popular podcast is releasing new, short episodes about Adnan Syed's latest hearing and bid for a retrial.

"This week I’m going to do something I haven’t done before, which is duck back into Adnan Syed’s case for a few days, to report on a court proceeding that’s happening in Baltimore," said host Sarah Koenig of this week's episodes. The first time Koenig talked to Syed the court had denied his petition for post-conviction relief, which he later appealed.

Now, Koenig is reporting on the three-day hearing in Baltimore and is recapping the events of the day with producer Dana Chivvis

Syed, 35, is currently serving a life sentence for the 1999 murder of his high school girlfriend Hae Min Lee. His attorney Justin Brown is arguing that Syed's previous defense attorney, the late Cristina Gutierrez, was incompetent. Asia McClain, a potential alibi witness, was never contacted. She testified at the hearing on Feb. 3.

In the first update, Koenig said she found the first day of the hearing "fascinating." She said the first half of the day was spent establishing that Gutierrez "had been declining in a bunch of ways" including "physically, professionally, financially." The big witness was, of course, McClain.

"It was kind of intense in the courtroom when she was testifying," said Koenig. "Serial was a part of her testimony so that was also very strange, a little bit surreal, like 'Is this happening right now?' moment."

Koenig said there was "a lot of drama in the room" when McClain was testifying since people were curious what she would say. She said McClain was "very sure of herself" and recapped what she had told Koenig in the podcast, that she was positive she saw Syed in the library on Jan. 13, 1999 shortly after 2:15 p.m.

"I felt for justice to be served we should put all of the information on the table," said McClain during the hearing, about why she wanted to testify.

Koenig said Syed was "very, very still" during the entire proceeding "almost like he just became a stone." She also said that she thinks the prosecutor is going to "go really hard on" McClain as the hearing continues on Thursday.

Sarah and Dana talk about what happened yesterday, on the first day of Adnan Syed's hearing. More on the site and in your feed right now (and Episode 6 of Season 2 will also be up in a few hours).
