Shanghai bans Stone from festival

As the Shanghai International Film Festival announced its early lineup for this year's event, the organizing committee has permanently banned Sharon Stone and her films because of her comments about the Sichuan earthquake, a SIFF spokesman said Thursday.

Stone served on the jury at the 2007 festival but earned herself the ban by stating that the earthquake might have been "karma" for China's treatment of Tibet. The official death toll from the May 12 earthquake exceeded 68,000 on Thursday, with millions more left homeless.

Stone also was dropped from local Christian Dior ads, for which she is a spokeswoman, according to the state-run English-language newspaper China Daily.

SIFF, meanwhile, released a list of 23 films that will screen during the fest, set for June 14-22. (partialdiff)
