Shooting Star profile: Anamaria Marinca
EmptyAnamaria Marinca is the daughter of a theater professor, and she trained at the George Enescu University of Fine Arts, Music and Drama in her birthplace of Iasi, Romania. She vaulted to international renown on the strength of her performance in Romanian director Cristian Mungiu's Ceausescu-era abortion drama "4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days." Based in London, Marinca has done TV work and theater there. She debuted in David Yates' TV drama "Sex Traffic" and appeared in Shakespeare's "Measure for Measure," by Simon McBurney's Theatre de Complicite, at the National Theatre and on a world tour.
The Hollywood Reporter: What has been your most challenging role to date?
Anamaria Marinca: Playing onstage in Christian Benedetti's production of "4.48 Psychosis" by Sarah Kane. It was an amazing experience for me.
THR: Where were you when you were told you had been picked to be a Shooting Star and are you happy to be in Berlin?
Marinca: I was with Cristian Mungiu in Berlin at the European Film Awards ceremony when I found out. I must say it was a very pleasant surprise, and I'm looking forward to meeting everyone else and to be back to Berlin.
THR: How do you think being selected will help your career?
Marinca: I don't know. I am not necessarily trying to build a career. Just to make the right choices both in life and art. Berlin will be most of all a wonderful opportunity to meet people I admire and respect.
THR: You've now worked with a Romanian, a British and a Hollywood director. Have you noticed any differences of approach to working with actors?
Marinca: I was surprised and very glad to observe that these artists share the same internal landscape. They have no borders in their artistic language. With David Yates, we shared the same values, and it was wonderful to communicate in such an intimate way with an artist who comes from such a different background.
THR: What future projects are you working on?
Marinca: I will do another production with Benedetti -- a very important name in my life and an amazing actor and director. He has had a huge influence on my work. I have been working with him for seven years now, and he is most likely to be the one to direct me in my next theater project.
