Short Shorts Film Festival opens in Tokyo

Winner promoted for Oscar nomination

TOKYO -- The 10th Short Shorts Film Festival opened in Tokyo and neighboring port Yokohama Friday showcasing international short films through June 14.

Eighty shorts from 25 countries were selected to screen from nearly 3,000 submissions.

The Grand Prix winner will be put forward for nomination in the short film category at the next Academy Awards, which has given the festival accreditation.

Running alongside the main event will be the fifth year of the Short Shorts Film Festival Asia, focusing on shorts from around the region.
