ShoWest to honor Ball

Alan Ball, set to make his feature directing debut on Warner Independent Pictures' "Towelhead," will receive a groundbreaking filmmaker award at ShoWest 2008.

Ball is perhaps best known for creating HBO's "Six Feet Under" and his Oscar-winning screenplay for the 1999 film "American Beauty." He will be feted at a March 11 luncheon during the exhibition confab. ShoWest is set to run March 10-13 at the Bally's and Paris hotels in Las Vegas.

"Ball's wide range of highly recognized work, from his award-winning production of 'American Beauty' to his award-winning direction and writing for 'Six Feet Under,' proves him to be an influential writer, director and producer," ShoWest co-managing director Mitch Neuhauser said.

Before entering film and TV work, Ball was a playwright ("Five Women Wearing the Same Dress") and a magazine art director.

WIP will release "Towelhead," a drama starring Summer Bishil and Aaron Eckhart, on Aug. 15.

ShoWest is produced by Nielsen Film Group, a unit of Nielsen Business Media, parent company of The Hollywood Reporter.
