Showtime Adds CNN Vet as New Doc and Unscripted Exec

Vinnie Malhotra joins the pay cable net as it ups its investment in documentary and sports programming.

Showtime is building the ranks of its unscripted team. The network has tapped CNN vet Vinnie Malhotra for a new role in the department, naming him senior vp documentary, unscripted and sports programming.

The pay cable network has been particularly aggressive in the space in 2015 — ordering sports serial A Season With Notre Dame and November doc The Spymasters.

"We are proud that Showtime has become a competitive player in the documentary world and a creative haven for award-winning filmmakers," said newly elevated president of programming Gary Levine. "Vinnie is joining our amazing team at an exciting time. We are thrilled to have an executive of his caliber taking our ambitious documentary and docuseries slate to the next level."

Reporting to Levine, Malhotra will work closely with exec vp and general manager of sports and event programming Stephen Espinoza.

Malhotra hails from CNN, where he's been since 2012, working on the cable news network's own push into unscripted. He served as senior vp development and acquisitions at CNN Worldwide, spearheading the launch of production unit CNN films and the acquisition of breakout doc Blackfish.

Showtime's bigger moves into documentary include three Oscar hopefuls this year: Listen to Me Marlon, Prophet's Prey and Dreamcatcher.
