Silver Pics upholds 'Conviction' with spec buy

Silver Pictures has acquired the spec "Conviction," an undercover cop thriller from first-time scribe Jon Herman. The project is set up at Warner Bros., where Silver Pictures has a deal.

The story centers on a master bank thief who, after serving time in prison, is enlisted by an FBI agent to trap a former associate; those familiar with the project say it contains elements of "Heat" and "Donnie Brasco."

The spec sale marks the first buy for Silver Pictures since former Focus exec Andrew Rona joined last month as president. Joel Silver and Rona will produce.

"Conviction" joins other Silver Pictures projects that include Guy Ritchie's "Sherlock Holmes" and the Denzel Washington Western "The Book of Eli."

Herman, repped by WMA and Steve Crawford at Luber Roklin, is a script reader who also worked for producer Alli Shearmur. (partialdiff)
