Silverdocs announces schedule

Screenings include 122 films from 58 countries

Silverdocs, a documentary festival sponsored by the American Film Institute and Discovery Channel, has scheduled screenings of competing films for June 15-22 at the AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center in Silver Spring, Md.

Screenings are set in six competitive groups: U.S. features, world features, music docs, short films and "Silver Spectrum" titles and special programs. A total 122 films representing 58 countries have been selected for the screenings from among almost 2,000 submissions.

"We received an extraordinary volume of high-quality submissions this year, and the 2009 program represents the very best the documentary form has to offer," Silverdocs artistic director Sky Sitney said. " It covers a wide range of issues, gives voice to diverse storytellers and touches upon the most compelling issues of our day."

The festival will also award special honors in various categories. Award winners will be announced June 20-21.
