Singapore tips 'Magic' for Oscar

Eric Khoo tries for Academy Award again

SINGAPORE -- Director Eric Khoo's latest film, "My Magic," has been selected as Singapore's official entry to the Oscars by the Singapore Film Commission, Khoo said Friday.

Shot on a budget of $250,000 and wrapped in just nine days, "My Magic" tells an intimate story of a father and son relationship. In May, it became the first Singapore movie to take part in the prestigious Palme d'Or competition at Festival de Cannes.

Khoo's last movie, "Be With Me," which has reaped a slew of international awards, was the first Singapore submission to the Academy in 2006, but was disqualified as it was deemed to be an English-language film. "My Magic" is mostly in Tamil with some Chinese Hokkien dialect.
