Singer enlists Cruise for UA WWII thriller

Tom Cruise is set to star in Bryan Singer's untitled United Artists project scripted by Christopher McQuarrie and Nathan Alexander. Singer and McQuarrie, who teamed to make the thriller "The Usual Suspects," are producing (HR 3/21).

The untitled thriller is based on actual events and depicts an attempt to assassinate Adolf Hitler at the height of World War II.

Cruise did not intend to star in the project, which was acquired last week by UA, the studio he now runs. However, during subsequent meetings, Singer became intrigued by the notion of Cruise as a central figure in the story and offered him the role.
