Sir Elton John Brings 'Rocketman' Style to Cannes With Glitz, Glamour and Gucci
The pop icon lit a sartorial fire in custom Gucci, his signature glitzy glasses and Chopard diamonds.
At the highly anticipated screening of Rocketman on Thursday at the Cannes Film Festival, the man of the hour — Sir Elton John — knocked his style game out of the park, with a little help from his favored label, Gucci, along with some flashy jewels by Chopard, the fest’s principal sponsor and the exclusive jeweler to outfit the biopic.
The 72-year-old pop icon, known for his over-the-top sartorial choices, stepped out at the film’s photo call wearing a powder blue custom Gucci suit with a notch-lapel jacket, decorated on the front with floral embroidery and the word “Rocketman” in flowery lettering. He accessorized with blinged-out $1,250 white leather platform Ace sneakers trimmed with rows of crystals and wide-rimmed, powder-blue cat-eye sunglasses, also by Gucci.
For the evening’s screening, the showman reached for a second custom look by Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele. His black Gucci tux with a grosgrain peak-lapel jacket rose to the occasion with a rocket embroidered on the front and the words “Rocket Man” spelled out in silver sequins on the back alongside a glittery star. John completed his look with another pair of glitzy sunglasses, his style signature, this time the $580 Gucci Elton John heart-shaped shades with rose-colored lenses that are part of a special capsule collection.
Adding to the flash, the legendary singer donned a single Chopard earring that showcased an oval-shaped 5.37-carat brilliant yellow diamond and a 1.02-carat brilliant white diamond, trimmed with another .6 carats of white diamonds and .25 carats of yellow diamonds. His white-button-front Gucci evening shirt with jeweled button detailing was finished off with 18-carat gold and diamond cufflinks, and John also donned a Chopard Imperiale timepiece in 18-carat white gold set with amethysts and 21.87 carats of diamonds.
Tonight marks the premiere of Rocketman in Cannes. Chopard is proud to be the exclusive jeweller of this musical fantasy film about the extraordinary life of Elton John, a great friend of the Maison. #neverordinary. John has had a longtime style collaboration with Gucci, ever since Jared Leto introduced the musician to Michele. Last year, the Italian fashion house announced that it would be designing custom looks for John’s Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour that kicked off in September. Gucci also created the vibrant geometric-patterned sequined jacket that John donned at the 2018 Grammys, along with boots emblazoned with his E.J. monogram and embroidered stars.
For those who want to pay an official style tribute to the legendary musician — who has announced that he will retire from performing in 2021 after his 300-date tour wraps — Gucci also offers $1,105 Gucci Elton John oversized square sunglasses decorated with Swarovski crystals and studs in multiple color ways.
