Sirius Canada tops 500,000 subscribers

TORONTO -- The Canadian licensee of U.S.-based Sirius Satellite Radio on Thursday said it has surpassed the 500,000 digital-radio subscriber mark.

Sirius Canada, a partnership of Sirius Satellite Radio, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. and radio broadcaster Standard Radio, said that the subscriber base translates into an 82% market share against rival Canadian Satellite Radio Holdings, the Canadian licensee for U.S.-based XM Satellite Radio.

The subscriber benchmark comes as shareholders for the U.S.-based subscription satellite radio services get set to vote Nov. 13 on a proposed $4.57 billion merger between Sirius Satellite Radio and XM Satellite Radio Holdings.

The Canadian licensees of both U.S. satellite radio networks insist that they are studying plans by their U.S. counterparts to merge before considering whether a similar tie-up in a highly regulated Canadian broadcast market will be pursued, or even possible.
