Its Sky Sport News, launched four and a half years ago, will become available in Germany and Austria without a Sky pay TV subscription in December.

Pan-European pay TV giant Sky said Wednesday that its Sky Deutschland arm will make its Sky Sport News HD network available on free TV, meaning without a Sky subscription, in December.

The 24-hour sports news channel, launched four and a half years ago, will be viewable in Germany and Austria for free and serve as a way to promote Sky and its services. It will be the German unit's first free TV offering.

Said Sky Deutschland CEO Carsten Schmidt: "We are convinced that the channel will be very popular beyond the circle of Sky customers and serve as a great billboard for the Sky brand as Germany's number one provider of sports."

Sky Sport News offers rolling news coverage about the world of soccer and other sports. Sky said it has an average audience of 580,000 viewers per day.

21st Century Fox owns a 39 percent stake in Sky.
