Freida Pinto to receive Palm Springs festival nod

Freida Pinto, one of the stars of "Slumdog Millionaire," is set to receive the Palm Springs International Film Festival's Breakthrough Performance Award.

The honor will be handed out Jan. 6 during the fest's awards gala at the Palm Springs Convention Center.

In her first lead role in a feature, Pinto appears in "Slumdog" as the love interest of the main character, Jamal (Dev Patel), a contestant on the Indian version of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire."

Past recipients of the Breakthrough Award include Marion Cotillard, Jennifer Hudson and Felicity Huffman.

The fest runs Jan. 6-19.
