Smosh: The Movie is getting a summer premiere.
The film, which stars comedy duo Anthony Padilla and Ian Hecox, will have its world premiere on July 23 in Anaheim, Calif., ahead of annual online video confab VidCon.
Padilla and Hecox are known for online comedy franchise Smosh, which has spawned several YouTube channels with 30 million subscribers. The Defy Media-owned brand was expanded into film with the help of AwesomenessTV.
The movie, written by Eric Falconer (Blue Mountain State) and directed by Alex Winter (Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure), tells the story of the duo's adventure through YouTube to delete an embarrassing video before Padilla's high school crush has the chance to see it. YouTubers Jenna Marbles, Grace Helbig, Harley Morenstein also appear in the film alongside Jillian Nelson, former pro wrestler Steve Austin and Michael Ian Black.
"Smosh: The Movie marks a major next step in serving the millions of Smosh fans and an opportunity to entertain millions more," said Defy CEO Matt Diamond. "With so many loyal fans expected at this year’s VidCon event, where we will also celebrate Smosh's ten year anniversary, we couldn’t think of a better place to debut the movie."
AwesomenessTV is also behind Expelled, a film starring Viner Cameron Dallas, which premiered in December. Added ATV CEO Brian Robbins: "This film was a natural for us to produce and now distribute with Defy."
Following Smosh's theatrical release, the film will immediately be available via digital HD and VOD platforms. Lionsgate had acquired the worldwide rights to the film but is now no longer attached to the project.
Barry Blumberg, Joe Davola, Shauna Phelan, Padilla and Hecox executive produced the project. Robbins served as producer.
