SMPTE to form broadband committee

Will focus on requirements for a universal file container

The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers is forming a new committee that will focus on creating mastering and packaging standards for broadband-delivered content.

The formation of the committe, to be known as Broadband 23B, reflects both the growth of digital platforms as well as the confusion that has arisen in the marketplace over the lack of interoperability.

"We could create standards so that all devices understand the content in the same way," said Wendy Aylsworth, engineering vice president of SMPTE and senior vp technology at Warner Bros. Entertainment.

The committee will concentrate on requirements and technical specifications for a universal file container, as well as examining metadata, essence formats, and new content identification procedures.

The inaugural meeting of Broadband 23B will be convened Oct. 27 at SMPTE 2008: Annual Tech Conference & Expo at the Renaissance Hollywood Hotel.
