SMPTE to honor tech innovators

Execs from NVision, ACME Animation among recipients

Entertainment technology innovators will be honored by the Society of Motion Picture & Television Engineers during an awards presentation at the organization's annual Tech Conference & Expo, Oct. 28-30 at the Renaissance Hotel in Hollywood.

Birney D. Dayton, chairman and CTO of technology company NVision, will be presented the SMPTE Progress Medal. David Master, founder of nonprofit educational organization ACME Animation, will receive the Eastman Kodak Gold Medal.

The Technicolor/Hebert T. Kalmus Gold Medal will be given to Michael E. Ryan, film technology director for entertainment imaging at Eastman Kodak. Dr. Albert Theuwissen, professor at Delft University of Technology and founder of Harvest Imaging, will be awarded the Fuji Gold Medal. The Samuel L. Warner Memorial Medal will be given to Shawn F. Jones, chief engineer and CTO of NT Audio.

In addition, 10 SMPTE Fellows will be named. They are: Merrick Ackermans, Jerry Butler, Tze Cheong Fung, Matthew S. Goldman, Al Kovalick, Lenny Lipton, John C. Miller, Ann Marie Rohaly, Ernesto Santos and J. Patrick Waddell.

Also during the ceremony, citations of outstanding service to the society will be presented to Patricia Keighley and Harold L. Miller, and society citations will given to Christopher Lennon and Stanley N. Baron.

Robb Weller will host the ceremony.
