'SNL' at 40: Fred Armisen Gives THR an Exclusive Tour of Studio 8H (Video)

The former castmember recalls his audition and points out funny features that viewers don't get to see.

For many aspiring Saturday Night Live performers, getting to audition on the studio stage is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Former castmember Fred Armisen remembers: "I was very like, 'I can't believe I got this far,' as opposed to 'Oh, I hope I get it!' "

For THR's SNL special issue, the Portlandia star gave an exclusive a tour of the infamous Studio 8H at Rockefeller Center.

Armisen shows off a sign underneath the elevated audience seats that reads "Watch your head," after which someone wrote in the name "Farley." Former castmember Chris Farley evidently would always hit his head when running off stage for a quick change, so someone evidently thought the extra reminder could prove helpful.

He also talks about getting "private shows" from musicians like Paul McCartney and Prince while they rehearsed for their live performances.

Armisen adds: "I was here for 11 years, and it had just been amazing times all the way through."
