Soccer kicks boxoffice into touch

German fans abandon theater for the pitch

BERLIN -- The Euro 2008 Soccer Championships kicked German boxoffice offside in the second quarter as soccer fans left the theaters to watch their teams battle it out on the pitch.

Revenue from April-June was a dismal 119.3 million euros ($189 million), with just 19 million tickets sold, a 50% drop from the first quarter.

The first quarter was particularly strong, however, so German boxoffice for the year thus far remains on par with 2007 figures, with a total boxoffice of 357.5 million euros ($568 million).
