NYFW: Music Duo Sofi Tukker Gets Party Started at Simon Miller Presentation
NY-based musicians Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern talk style and new music at designers Daniel Corrigan and Jake Sargent's spring 2016 presentation.
Some fashion shows are more like a celebration, and some are like an experience. The guys behind Simon Miller, Daniel Corrigan and Jake Sargent, make the goal of their presentation to be more like a party. This season, they had some help from Sofi Tukker, an electronic music-making duo comprised of Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern who met at Brown University.
"We met them through friends and we immediately fell in love with their sound and how eclectic it is and how catchy and there's a lot of momentum behind them," said Sargent. Both designers are fans of the pair's single "Drinkee," which lead singer Sophie Hawley-Weld sings entirely in Portugese. "That's the song when it comes on you'll see Jake kind of grooving out to," laughed Coorigan.

Pret-a-Reporter: The designers behind Simon Miller seem to really appreciate your eclectic, international sound. Do you think that's what you are known for?
Sophie Hawley-Weld: I grew up in an International school community my whole life and my national identity is very confused so I grew up listening to music from all around the music. I don't know much about pop music, and we sample music from all different cultures. I was trained in West African dance, so my sense of rhythm when I move is obviously informed by that and I obviously sing in Portuguese.
What do you mean your "national identity" is confused?
Hawley-Weld: I have an American passport, but I was born in Germany; my parents live in the Netherlands; i went to boarding school in Italy and I went to these boarding schools where there were 200 kids from 100 countries, so when people ask me where I'm from I don't really know the answer.
What do you prefer to wear when performing?
Tucker Halpern: We're still sort of figuring that out, but it's an important thing we talk about a lot. We ended up naturally wearing what we normally wear. I wear black jeans and boots and a ripped cut-off, and Sophie usually goes lighter.
Hawley-Weld: I like to wear something I can move in, and light colors because of the stage lights. I used to be really into Kundalini yoga, and all the teachers show up and they always wear white because they say it expands their aura by several feet, so I thought, "If it works for them..."
You are releasing some new music soon too, correct?
Halpern: We have our first EP coming out on Heavy Rock Records really soon (October) and some really awesome remixes of our first song "Drinkee," which I'm really excited about.
The Simon Miller guys said their favorite song is "Drinkee." Is that the plan for today, to play that a couple times?
Sofi: We'll play some new stuff too that won't even be on the EP, we have a lot of material at this point, and we want to share it.
The Simon Miller spring 2016 presentation took place on Sept. 15 at 463 West Street.
