Sogecable acquires soccer tourney rights

MADRID -- Hours after news came out that pay TV powerhouse Sogecable would be acquired entirely by its parent group Prisa in a public bid Thursday, the operator announced it has acquired exclusive Spanish rights to the Euro 2008 soccer cup tournament.

The move benefits both the company's pay TV platform Digital Plus and its free-to-air channel Cuatro. Digital Plus will offer all 31 matches of the tournament, while Cuatro will air the Spanish national team's games.

Sogecable, which also bought rights to all summaries and interviews, also acquired all high-definition rights.

The Eurocopa kicks off June 7 in Austria and Switzerland. Spain's first match is June 10 in Austria against Russia.
