Sogepaq closes pair of U.S. rights deals

MADRID -- Spanish distribution house Sogepaq on Tuesday announced a U.S. rights deal with Strand Releasing for Daniel Sanchez-Arevalo's award-winning title "DarkBlueAlmostBlack" (AzulOscuroCasiNegro).

Sogepaq also closed an all-rights U.S. deal with Here! Films on Emilio Martinez Lazaro's Spanish boxoffice hit "The 2 Sides of the Bed." Here! will release the film theatrically through sister company Regent Releasing.

Canadian rights for both films were taken by Mongrel Media.

"DarkBlueAlmostBlack" is award-winning short-filmmaker Sanchez-Arevalo's debut feature . The film was produced by Tesela and won the Europa Cinemas award for best European film at the Venice Days section at the Venice International Film Festival in 2006. It also proved the surprise winner at the Spanish Academy's recent Goya awards ceremony, snagging three honors: new director, new actor (Quim Gutierrez) and supporting actor (Antonio de la Torre).

"The 2 Sides of the Bed," directed -- as was its predecessor "The Other Side of the Bed" -- by Emilio Martinez-Lazaro, was produced by the producers of the original film, Telespan 2000, Estudios Picasso and Impala.

"The 2 Sides of the Bed," released by Buena Vista in Spain, was the second-highest-grossing Spanish film of 2005 and sold more than 1.5 million tickets.
