'Sonata' director named AFA dean

Mentoring program runs alongside Pusan festival

SEOUL -- Kiyoshi Kurosawa (“Tokyo Sonata") was nominated as the dean of the Asian Film Academy for this year’s Pusan International Film Festival, the organizer said Friday.

Separately, the Malaysian director Ho Yuhang ("At the End of Daybreak") and Mahmoud Kalari, the Iranian cinematographer of “Offside,” the winner of the Silver Bear at the Berlin film festival, will each take on roles as the academy’s “mentors” for directing and cinematography.

The AFA is an educational program jointly hosted by Dongseo University, the Korean Academy of Film Arts, and the Pusan International Film Festival.

Twenty-four fellows from 16 countries will join this year’s AFA, which runs October 1 to 17. Under the faculty’s supervision, the participants will learn about the practice and theory of filmmaking through short film productions, workshops, discussion sessions, and individual mentoring.
