Sony BMG eyes online music service

DENVER -- Sony BMG apparently is planning ... something. CEO Rolf Schmidt-Holtz told a German newspaper that he is interested in a digital music subscription service of some sort.

It's not clear whether he's proposing a consumer-facing subscription service based just on the Sony BMG catalog or more of a B2B service that would allow other digital services to access the entire catalog with a subscription fee.

"The simplest option would be a flat rate under which a monthly payment would provide access to our entire music catalogue for all digital players, including Apple's iPod," Schmidt-Holtz told Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

"It is even possible that clients could conserve some songs indefinitely, that they would own them even after the subscription expired." One of the confusing parts is the use of the word "clients," which could mean "customers," as the article originally appeared in German.
