First up is a Mexico-based thriller series from 'Homeland' creator Ran Tellem.

Sony Pictures Television (SPT) and Spain’s The Mediapro Studio have signed a co-development and co-production deal, the first ever between the two companies.

The agreement kicks off with a 13-episode, hourlong thriller titled Implacables – Mexico.

The series is originally based on a project titled 35 years and Counting created by Ran Tellem (Primetime Emmy Award-winning producer and creator of Homeland) and Mariano Baselga. Production is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2019 in Mexico City.

SPT will have distribution rights in the U.S. (including Puerto Rico), Latin America and Canada, and The Mediapro Studio will distribute in the rest of the world.

“It’s an exciting opportunity to be able to partner with The Mediapro Studio, a prolific creator of great content,” said Ana Bond, senior vp and managing director, international production, Latin America for SPT. “Ran’s ability to create and tell such compelling and thrilling stories is sure to keep our audiences on the edge of their seats.”

“Working alongside SPT in creating a premium thriller with the unique backdrop of Mexico City has been an incredible journey,” said Tellem, who also serves as The Mediapro Studio’s head of international development.

Implacables – Mexico tells the story of four detectives from different generations who come together to capture a serial rapist who has evaded the law for 35 years. Believing that his arrest could break the cycle, they discover that the case is just the tip of the iceberg in what is the largest and most dangerous human trafficking network in the world.

The Mediapro Studio announced another development and production deal early this month with Daytime Emmy-winner Justin Weber, beginning with a second season of the Amazon Prime Video series Six Dreams.

In January, the group signed a co-production deal with Mexico’s Televisa to start with another Tellem-created scripted series, Unwanted, about two families whose lives change dramatically when a surrogate pregnancy takes an unexpected turn.

The Mediapro Studio plans to produce as many as 34 Spanish- and English-language series this year, investing in content across Europe, Latin America, the U.S. and the Middle East.
