Sony Pics Home Ent taps Meade for lead China sales

Named vp, China, to expand operations, push Blu-Ray

BEIJING--Sony Pictures Home Entertainment (SPHE) has appointed Tim Meade to vice president for China to oversee the expansion of operations where Sony recently began distributing Blu-ray Discs.

Based at SPHE's regional headquarters in Hong Kong, Meade will supervise China sales and marketing efforts with SPHE's local distribution partner, Excel Media. He will report to Norman Tajudin, SPHE's vp, international.

"China is a key market in Sony’s overall strategic growth plans and we need a strong team on the ground to manage our strategic investments there," Tajudin said in a statement Monday. "Tim has the right experience and expertise to work in tandem with our existing partners in the region, our Sony sister companies, and the SPHE home office to ensure our success in this important emerging market."

Meade moves into the job from his previous post of eight years as SPHE's vp for Asia emerging markets.

He helped launch the Blu-ray Disc format in China in 2008 and paved the way for local production of Blu-ray Discs at a plant in Shanghai. SPHE has distributed DVD and VCD content in China since 1999.

In 2007, Meade also launched Blu-ray across Asia, where the format contributes 20% of SPHE's revenue from the region.

Meade also helped SPHE to become the first studio to license its content for home entertainment distribution in Vietnam.
