Sony Pictures International to Produce Spanish Comedy 'Under the Same Roof'
Juana Macias will direct the comedy about a couple who gets divorced but continues to live together, with Spain's Feelgood Media co-producing.
Sony Pictures International has come on board to produce Spanish-language comedy Under the Same Roof from Juana Macias, the director of the 2016 hit We Are Pregnant.
The feature tells the story of a couple who bought their house during the heydey of Spain's real-estate bubble. Years later, when their daughter leaves home, the couple decides to divorce but continue to live under the same roof, because house prices have collapsed, and they can't afford to sell their home.
Jordi Sanchez and Silvia Abril star as the couple, with Daniel Guzman, Malena Alterio, Alvaro Cervantes, Cristina Castano and Ana Morgade co-starring.
Sony is co-producing the feature with Juan Moreno and Guillermo Sempere of Spain's Feelgood Media, which produced Macias' We Are Pregnant. Shooting on Under the Same Roof has already begun in Madrid.
“We instantly connected with Juan Moreno and Guillermo Sempere because of their overall vision of the production and the clarity of their ideas,” said Ivan Losada, managing director of Sony Pictures International Productions. "They brought us this proposal at precisely the time when we were looking for a project like this, a battle of the sexes story, a plot about how eternal love can become a cage where two beasts live, willing to do anything to finish off the other in order to survive. It is a comedy that will have no limits."
Macias called the characters in Under the Same Roof “as contradictory, delirious and absurd as life itself,” adding that the cooperation with Sony would allow the project to “reach its full potential.”
Sony has been actively boosting its foreign-language production slate, particularly in Spanish-speaking territories. Late last year, the studio boarded The Covenant, a local-language horror thriller from up-and-coming Spanish filmmaker David Victori, which stars Belen Rueda (The Orphanage) alongside fellow Spanish actors Mireia Oriol and Dario Grandinetti. Spain's Ikiru Films and 4Cats Pictures are co-producing.
