Sony Pictures Television Backs Drama Series Arm of 'Best Exotic Marigold Hotel' Producer

In the latest drama-focused deal overseen by SPT president international production Andrea Wong, the company buys a stake in Blueprint Pictures' newly launched TV arm.

Sony Corp.'s Sony Pictures Television has bought a minority stake in Blueprint Television, the newly launched drama series production arm of Pete Czernin and Graham Broadbent's U.K. producer Blueprint Pictures (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, In Bruges, Seven Psychopaths).

Financial details weren't disclosed.

It's another deal designed to expand the company's business focused on high-end drama series with international appeal, with SPT set to distribute Blueprint shows globally.

Blueprint co-chairmen Broadbent and Czernin and managing director Diarmuid McKeown have teamed up with executive producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins, who joins Blueprint as head of television following his time as showrunner of BBC soap opera EastEnders.

Blueprint Television has one show, fantasy adventure drama The Last Dragonslayer for Sky 1, in production and three series in development.

SPT president international production Andrea Wong and her team have been looking to build the company's drama business, which already includes such series as The Crown and The Halcyon.

Said Wong: “Pete and Graham are exactly the kind of people we want to partner with -- hugely creative and highly motivated. They already have an incredibly strong development slate, and we can't wait to help them realize their vision for Blueprint Television."

Earlier this year, Sony Pictures Television acquired a minority stake in Fable Pictures, the new production banner launched by Faye Ward, the British producer behind Suffragette. In 2012, SPT had agreed to acquire British production banner Left Bank Pictures in a push into scripted production in the U.K.
