Sony Unveils New Digital Camera

Company previews the latest addition to its CineAlta digital cinematography line at a customer event.

Sony presented its plans to expand its digital camera lineup during a Los Angeles-area customer event Wednesday.

It previewed the latest addition to its CineAlta digital cinematography line, the PMW-F3, a professional handheld digital production camera with a Super 35mm imager.

It also discussed plans to expand its 35mm large format sensor camcorder lineup by previewing a prototype of a new type of E-mount interchangeable lens camcorder. This addition to Sony's NXCAM line was scheduled to be displayed under glass as Wednesday's event.

Both expand the Sony lineup with professional cameras that support file-based (tapeless) workflows at entry-level prices.

Sony reported that the NXCAM HD camcorder under development will be equipped with a Super 35mm equivalent sensor and the recording format will be AVCHD. Sony plans to ship the camera in mid-2011 for $6,000.

The PMW-F3 -- which at $16,000 without lenses is the entry-level camera in the "CineAlta" line -- is slated to ship to customers Feb. 1.
