Sony ups Shabroom at Crackle

NEW YORK -- Sony Picture Entertainment named Jonathan Shambroom senior vp and general manager of its online video site Crackle Wednesday.

Shambroom will now lead Crackle, which was founded under the name of Grouper in 2004 by Josh Felser and Dave Samuel.

The two had been presidents of the company, which was purchased by SPE in 2006.

When asked if Felser and Samuel would still retain a management role, a spokesman for the company said, "their roles are changing and that's still being worked out."

The spokesman also said that the company has "let some people go."

Silicon Valley gossip site Valleywag reported Wednesday that Crackle had laid off eight employees but the spokesman wouldn't confirm this number.

He said, though, despite these changes, the company is "continuing to grow and actively hire."

Crackle presents short-form content from Sony Pictures Television and other producers along with user-generated content with an eye on graduating it to TV or film.

It is distributed across Facebook, AOL, MySpace and Sony platforms.

Shambroom had previously overseen product development and marketing for Crackle.
