Sony Pictures' Josh Greenstein Staying Put as President of Marketing and Distribution

Greenstein — who was informally meeting with other studios — has signed a new multiyear contract.

Sony Pictures Entertainment president of worldwide marketing and distribution Josh Greenstein is staying at the film studio.

Greenstein, whose contract was up this month, has signed a new three-year deal with Sony after meeting informally with several other suitors, including 20th Century Fox and Paramount Pictures, his alma mater. He is said to have also spoken with Hasbro, which is ramping up its film operations.

The veteran studio executive first arrived Sony in September 2014 when former SPE co-chairman Amy Pascal was still running the studio. Several months later, the Sony hack occurred, resulting in Pascal's exit and Tom Rothman's hire as chairman of SPE's Motion Picture Group.

There was another management shake-up earlier this year when Sony Entertainment chief executive Michael Lynton announced his departure. In May, Sony Corp. CEO Kazuo Hirai tapped former Fox Networks Group chairman Tony Vinciquerra to serve as CEO of SPE, overseeing film and TV.

Greenstein will continue to report directly to Rothman. His decision to remain in the top job ensures stability for the studio at a crucial time. After a string of box-office misses, Sony successfully revived its marquee superhero franchise this summer with the release of Spider-Man: Homecoming, made in concert with Marvel Studios. Edgar Wright's Baby Driver was also a big win for Rothman and Greenstein.

The studio is in a stronger position now than when Josh arrived in 2014, and his brilliant work has been integral to that growth. He kicks my butt on the golf course, but is otherwise a tremendous partner. I thank Josh for his efforts and dedication, and look forward to working closely with him to take Sony, and his career, to even greater heights.”

Added Greenstein: “Sony Pictures is my home and I could not be happier. The studio has undergone enormous change since I arrived, but today I feel like we are hitting on all cylinders. I especially want to thank Tom, from whom I have learned so much since we started working together. Tom deserves enormous credit for the many positive changes in the Motion Picture Group over the last couple years, and I am excited to work with him to continue that momentum. I also want to thank my excellent team for their hard work and dedication on every one of our films."

Greenstein is currently overseeing the international marketing campaign for Blade Runner 2049 (due out Sept. 29), which Sony is handling overseas, and the worldwide marketing and release campaign for the studio's Christmas tentpole, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (Dec. 20), among other titles.

Prior to Sony, Greenstein was president of worldwide marketing at Paramount.
