'Soul Power' strikes chord at SPC

R&B rockumentary debuting at AFM

Sony Pictures Classics has acquired North American and Latin American rights to the R&B star-filled rockumentary "Soul Power" on the eve of its AFM market debut.

Jeffrey Levy-Hinte's film, which premiered this fall at the Toronto International Film Festival, features performances from James Brown, B.B. King, Bill Withers, Celia Cruz and others at the historic "Zaire '74" concert in Africa. The 12-hour, three-night-long event was tied to the legendary "Rumble in the Jungle" boxing match between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman.

Submarine Entertainment negotiated the deal with SPC and sold rights in other territories to Celluloid Dreams, which is repping the film at AFM.

Levy-Hinte and his Antidote banner's recent productions include "Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired."
