SoundCloud Appoints NBCUniversal Veteran to Executive Role
Alison Moore has been named chief revenue officer at the music streaming company.
A month after reporting wide losses, music streaming startup SoundCloud is bringing in an experienced television executive to oversee its moneymaking businesses.
SoundCloud announced Monday that it has tapped NBCUniversal veteran Alison Moore as chief revenue officer, a role which will give her oversight of ad sales and products in the U.S. and abroad, marketing and the company's forthcoming consumer subscription products. She will report to CEO Alexander Ljung and will be based in New York.
"This new role represents a rare opportunity to grow a vibrant and diverse business platform creating exciting new consumer offers that amplify SoundCloud's huge community of creators and brings to light an unrivaled catalog of music and audio, which houses the most creative voices in music today," said Moore.
Her appointment comes as SoundCloud is investing heavily into growth as it competes against streaming juggernauts Spotify and Pandora. The company, which is said to have 175 million monthly users, reported in February that it earned $19.7 million in revenue in 2014 but more than doubled its losses to $41.8 million as it hired more employees and increased its marketing spend.
SoundCloud raised $77 million in funding last year and executives have said that they expect the company to operate at a loss for another three years as they continue to invest in the business.
Enter Moore, who joins SoundCloud from NBCU. There, she was general manager and executive vp for the company's TV Everywhere business. She previously served as general manager of DailyCandy, the digital lifestyle brand that Comcast acquired in 2008 and NBCU subsequently shut down in 2014.
Moore also spent nine years at HBO, rising to the role of senior vp digital products, where she oversaw consumer experience, operations and audience development for HBO Go and other digital platforms.
"Alison is an innovative and strategic leader with a proven track record of building consumer business strategies that drive new revenue growth across multiple platforms," said Ljung. "Most importantly, she has an understanding of both the complexities of SoundCloud's business and the content and entertainment industries, having spent the majority of her career building businesses, products and experiences that deepen consumer engagement with extraordinary content."
