Sounds of silence on Kino International

Art house supplier Kino International is releasing two DVDs of influential and in some cases unreleased works by silent film masters Edwin S. Porter and George Melies. "Before the Nickelodeon: The Early Cinema of Edwin S. Porter" and "The Magic of Melies" both arrive in stores April 22.

Porter, best known as the director of "The Great Train Robbery," is profiled in a 60-minute documentary co-written and directed by film scholar Charles Musser; the disc also includes three vintage shorts never before available on DVD, dating back to 1902's "Uncle Josh at the Moving Picture Show."

The Melies disc features a short docu and 15 exclusive films directed by Melies, considered moviedom's first special-effects man.
